 Behind the Landscape.

  • You have to drive 35 miles to get from end to end on the largest playa, or dried clay bed.

  • Because of the volcanic history in the area, there are natural hot springs scattered about, providing water for vegetation and unique animal species to thrive. Don't get too excited, though, because most of these springs are hot enough to boil you alive.

  • 14,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, this entire basin, as well as most of Western Nevada, used to be under water as part of the ancient Lake Lahontan. Horizontal markings along the surrounding mountains show the lake's old shorelines.
